Workshop on MIMO Technology in IEEE 802.11n Standard
Program Description:
Wireless LAN has penetrated into numerous markets including laptops, VoIP phones, and portable consumer electronic devices. Nearly 300 million WLAN chips were sold in 2007. This number is expected to reach almost 700 million in 2011 with 50% of the units based on the 802.11n standard. MIMO is one of the key components of this standard.Other wireless standards such as 802.16e (WiMAX) and LTE also exploit MIMO to enhance user experience by improving the data rate and/or reliability of the link. This course will provide a primer on the 802.11n standard as well as MIMO technology.
Dr. Sankaran will present the evolution of the 802.11 standard, a detailed discussion of various PHY and MAC level modifications proposed in 802.11n, and focus specifically on the MIMO technology used in the standard with an intuitive explanation for how MIMO enhances user experience by increasing the data rate and/or signal quality. Upon completion of this course, the attendees will know the key features of the 802.11n standard and also have a basic understanding of the MIMO techniques.
Speaker:
Dr. Sundar G. Sankaran, Atheros Communications, San Jose, USA
About the speaker:
Dr. Sundar Sankaran has been working in wireless industry for almost 10 years designing wireless communication systems, including WiFi and WiMAX. He has published many papers in refereed conferences and journals, and authored book chapters. He is also the inventor/co-inventor of 8 U.S. patents (including pending). He earned a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech. Teaching is one of his passions. He taught a senior level course on Digital Signal Processing at Virginia Tech. He currently serves as an adjunct faculty in the Electrical Engineering Department at Santa Clara University. He is a senior member of the IEEE.
