Course on Wi-Fi with FOSS

Report on 4th batch of Training during Dec 17 - 22, 2007
The communications group of
AU-KBC Research Centre (http://comm.au-kbc.org) in association
with the NRCFOSS program (http://www.nrcfoss.org.in) have
jointly conducted “WiFi with FOSS” course - a
practically intensive training program combining Wi-Fi and
open source tools. The 4th batch of the WiFi with FOSS course
was held during Dec. 17 - 22, 2007.
The objective of the Wi-Fi with FOSS course
is to enlighten the participants on various aspects of IEEE
802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), popularly known
as Wi-Fi. The topics covered include Introduction to Linux,
Networking basics, WiFi -Physical layer, WiFi - MAC layer
and Security issues in WLANs. The lectures on almost all the
concepts are supplemented with Lab demonstrations providing
hands-on experience with use of open source tools. The hardware
/ software resources used for the course include Atheros Access
Points, PCMCIA Client cards, MADWiFi driver, Wireshark/Ethereal
Sniffer, Iperf / Jperf and Linux OS.
The training programme in Dec
‘07 had 32 participants including students and faculty
from Sri Venkateswara College of Engg, Velammal College of
Engg, Sri Sai Ram Engg. College, Sathyabama University, RMK
Engg. College, Valliammai Engg. College, Easwari Engg. College,
Sri Muthukumaran Inst. of Tech, Saveetha Engg. College and
C. Abdul Hakem College of Engg. & Tech. There were also
industry participants from BSNL Chennai, Symbian India Pvt.
Ltd., Bangalore and Verizon Data Services (India) Pvt. Ltd.
Chennai.
Dr. S. Srikanth, Mr. K. Bhaskar, Mr. Md.
Imran, Mr. Sanjeev Saini were the resource persons from AU-KBC
Research Centre. Industry perspective on Wi-Fi drivers and
System overview was presented by Mr. R. Vasudevan, Atheros
Communications, Chennai. The lectures and lab sessions were
highly interactive with usual spirited participation from
the audience.
The participants were presented with certificates,
also all presentations slides, reference materials and tools
were distributed through CDs at the end of the course.
