Certification Course on Wi-Fi with FOSS

Report on the training conducted during March 3-25, 2007
The AU-KBC Research Centre (www.au-kbc.org)
has been organizing Wi-Fi courses for students and specialized
corporate audience in the last few years. Recently, Wi-Fi
combined with appropriate open source tools has become popular
in the academic and professional community. The communications
group at AU-KBC (http://comm.au-kbc.org) and the NRCFOSS program
(http://www.nrcfoss.org.in) have joined hands to conduct a
practically intensive training program combining Wi-Fi and
open source tools. The first edition of the course was held
to a full house during the New Year vacation period (http://comm.au-kbc.org/comm_fosscourse_Report.htm).
Based on interest and to enable participation from working
professionals, an 8 day course spread out over 4 weekends
was organized during March 3rd – 25th, 2007 at the AU-KBC
Research Centre.
The objective of the weekend Wi-Fi course
is to enlighten the participants on various aspects of IEEE
802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), popularly known
as Wi-Fi. The topics covered include the Physical layer, MAC
layer concepts along with Security issues in WLANs. The lectures
on almost all the concepts are supplemented with Lab demonstrations
providing hands-on experience with use of Open source tools
in WiFi. The hardware / software resources used for the course
include Atheros Access Points, PCMCIA Client cards, MADWiFi
driver, Ethereal Sniffer, Iperf / Jperf and Linux OS.
The training programme was conducted during
March 3-25, 2007 on weekends. 22 participants include students
and faculty from IIT Madras, Anna University (CEG and MIT),
St. Joseph’s College of Engineering, S.A. Engg College,
Sri Venkateswara College of Engg, St. Peter’s Engg College,
Prathyusha Engg. College, P.R Engg. College, M.I.ET Trichy,
and Sri Lakshmi Ammal Engg. College. There were also industry
participants from Wipro Technologies Ltd, Atheros Communications,
Chennai Customs, Tech Mahindra Ltd. and Elegant Systems.
Dr. S. Srikanth, Prof. M. Sethuraman, Mr.
Jackson Juliet Roy, Mr. K. Bhaskar, Mr. Sathish and Mr. Md.
Imran of AU-KBC Research Centre were the resource persons
from AU-KBC Research Centre. Industry perspective on Open
Source and Wi-Fi drivers were presented by Mr. R. Vasudevan,
Atheros Communications. The lectures and lab sessions were
highly interactive with usual spirited participation from
the audience.
Certificates along with CDs (containing all
presentations, reference materials and Tools) were distributed
at the end the course to all the participants.
